 The Answer

Tacking and Compass Bearing

In this lesson we shall be working from a close hauled point of sail.  The terminology will be from the close hauled point of sail.  However, the mathematics should offer a correct solution whether you are pointing into the wind or running with the wind.

Offered below the narrative is a chart to assist with the learning of the mathematics.

If your compass is not operative, then do the following:

  1. Turn your entire body and face directly to the bow of the boat,

  2. Hold the position and hold out straight your right arm for a tack to the Starboard -

  3. point with your hand or fingers to a stationary object on shore or in the water,

  4. Inform the crew of the new position for the bearing,

  5. Bark "Ready About",

  6. Wait for the crew to respond with the affirmation of "Ready",

  7. Bark "Hard alee" or "Coming About",

  8. When the bow of the boat is pointing to the object, turn the tiller to midship or turn the wheel to set a straight course

  9. Adjust the sails or helm as needed

If your compass is working follow the same procedure, however watch the compass readings to set the new course instead of the stationary object.

As a brief summary of using the bearings -

Direction To Turn   Exceptions
Pointing To Port Subtract 90 from the compass bearing to compute the new bearing Where the current bearing is between 0 and 90 Degrees.  (If you are turning LEFT and the Compass points to the upper RIGHT the exception applies)

ADD 270

Pointing To Starboard Add 90 to the compass bearing to compute the new bearing Where the current bearing is between 270 and 360 Degrees.  (If you are turning RIGHT and the Compass points to the upper LEFT the exception applies)

SUBTRACT 270
